How to Burn Resin Incense on Charcoal
Resin incense such as frankincense, myrrh, and copal is traditionally burned over hot charcoal to release its rich fragrance and aromatic smoke. Unlike incense sticks or cones, natural resin does not burn easily on its own, so a charcoal briquet provides the heat needed to slowly release its aroma.
Step 1: Prepare Your Burner
Place your charcoal in a heat-resistant incense burner. Adding a layer of sand underneath the charcoal can help absorb heat.
Step 2: Light the Charcoal
Using tongs, carefully light the edge of the charcoal. Quick-light charcoal may begin to spark as it ignites.
Step 3: Allow the Charcoal to Heat
Wait until the charcoal is fully heated and begins developing a light gray or ashy surface.
Step 4: Add Your Resin Incense
Place a small amount of frankincense, myrrh, copal, or your preferred resin directly onto the hot charcoal.
Step 5: Enjoy the Aroma
As the resin heats, aromatic smoke will begin to rise. Resin incense has traditionally been used during prayer, meditation, spiritual cleansing, protection work, and other rituals.
Step 6: Allow Everything to Cool
Never leave burning charcoal unattended. Keep the burner on a heat-resistant surface in a well-ventilated area and allow the charcoal to cool completely before disposing of it.
